Tom Schneider: Compositions I Chicago Athletic Association Hotel

7 - 10 April 2022

Outsider EXPO at CAA: Tom Schneider curated by Daniel Malarkey

During Expo Chicago, new works by Chicago based artist Tom Schneider will be exhibited at the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel across from the Art Institute of Chicago. Though Schneider may currently be considered an outsider artist, he was exhibited at the historic Phyllis Kind Gallery in the late 90s and so is very much a rediscovery in the making in Chicago art today.

In the venetian gothic architecture of the entrance the hotel’s visitors will be confronted with six works which are cinematic lens works that crop the scene of a larger painting into medium size scenes with heightened pointillism.

The new format of art exhibitions in hotels is taking the art world by storm with the huge success of Felix Art Fair at the Hollywood Roosevelt in LA. This mini-exhibition is in the same spirit.

Tom Schneider was born in 1963 in Evanston and attended the Art Institute of Chicago. Famed Hairy Who artist Karl Wirsum was his teacher and mentor. In 1998 he had his first solo exhibition at the Phyllis Kind Gallery. In 2018 he had a solo museum show at GC Museum of Art. He has been exhibited in major group exhibitions in London in 2020 & 2021 at Dickinson Gallery, St James’s, and on Cork St behind the Royal Academy.
